That’s all from St James’ Park today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!Following their long-awaited first win of the league season, Newcastle can return to the training pitch before next Sunday’s clash with Leicester, while Burnley will be at home to a buoyant West Ham side who have just beaten the European champions.

An improved showing in the second half finally helped Newcastle over the line, to the joy of their committed supporters, whose relief was palpable at the final whistle.

While they had to rely on an error from the opposition goalkeeper, Eddie Howe’s men were ultimately deserving winners in an often scrappy affair.

They will not care how it was done though, as the Magpies now pull level with ailing Burnley on points and are off the bottom of the table.

90′ + 4′ FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-0 BURNLEY

90′ + 3′ In the third of four minutes of stoppage time, Burnley flood forward in numbers.

As a long ball eventually drops to McNeil, Newcastle hearts skip a beat – but he turns and fires over from an awkward angle!

J. MurphyA. Saint-Maximin

90′ + 1′ Having illuminated the game with his flashes of inspiration, Saint-Maximin is now withdrawn and Murphy comes on.

90′ A long, dipping cross from the left by McNeil somehow evades everyone amassed in the Newcastle box and drifts out for a goal-kick to the home side.

89′ Perhaps a last throw of the dice fails for Burnley, as everyone piles into the area in hope of latching on to Roberts’ long throw from the right.

Newcastle get it away, though.

Javi ManquilloYellow Card

87′ Manquillo is now yellow-carded by the referee, as Newcastle nervously edge closer to the winning line.F. FernándezM. Almirón

85′ After an energetic shift, Almiron comes off to be replaced by the more defensive option of Fernandez.

84′ A brief check helps the VAR conclude that Rodriguez was definitely offside as he tucked the ball home. No goal! Newcastle breathe again!

83′ OFFSIDE! Out of nothing, a tremendous passing move in the final third helps find Rodriguez in front of goal, and he stuns St James’ into silence with a smart finish. However, the flag goes up for offside – the VAR will now check.

82′ Under a lot of pressure in the six-yard box, Tarkowski glances a header comfortably wide of Dubravka’s goal.

75′ For an obvious clip of Wilson’s heels, Collins is the first man to be booked today.C. RobertsM. Lowton

75′ Lowton’s game is brought to an end and his replacement, Roberts, makes a first top-flight appearance for over three years.

74′ Willock’s claims for a penalty after an apparent tug back by Brownhill are summarily dismissed by the referee, who has been keen to let play flow freely today.

72′ Burnley are taking advantage of Newcastle dropping off a yard or two to push forward just a little. But the home side quickly counter and Wilson twice sees shots blocked inside the box.

70′ Dyche looks to be lining up at least one change, as he seeks to stop Newcastle drawing level on points with his struggling side.

68′ A timely intervention by Lewis as last man stops Gudmundsson latching onto a loose ball across the box, and Newcastle nerves are already starting to reappear.

66′ An inswinging Newcastle corner is this time punched away by Pope, who will regret not taking that course of action in the first half.

64′ The first 20 minutes of the half have been bossed by the intensity of a Newcastle side clearly lifted by taking the lead. Will their confidence last into the dying minutes, though, as an elusive win looms closer?

62′ Wilson and Taylor tangle on the touchline, with the Newcastle striker seeming to manhandle Burnley’s left-back a little too aggressively. However, the referee is happy for play to continue.

59′ Gudmundsson fires a left-footed free-kick from outside the box high over the bar, wasting a rare Burnley opportunity.

57′ With just over half an hour left to turn things around, Burnley are still hoping to end a winless streak of eight away Premier League matches. Not only that, but they they have also won just two of their last 17 league games kicking off at the traditional time on Saturday.

54′ GOOD SAVE! Wilson does well to free Almiron on the edge of the box, and the latter’s low shot is diverted just wide of the post by the full-length dive of Pope. Newcastle are certainly the dominant side at the moment.

53′ Wilson and Collins are both passed fit to return to the fray, and the action goes on.

52′ From the right-sided corner, Dubravka fumbles the ball but Newcastle ultimately get it away. Both Wilson and Collins collided with the goal frame, though, and lie prone on the turf in some pain.

51′ Taylor raids forward, causing Almiron to track back as cover for Manquillo and he concedes a corner on the right.

49′ Newcastle’s go-to man has had the fans off their seats several times already, and Saint-Maximin is the driving force behind a lively start to the second period for the Toon.

48′ Almiron goes down briefly, clutching his forehead, after a foul by McNeil. He is soon back into the action, though, and has a speculative shot blocked by Taylor on the edge of the box.

47′ An early Newcastle corner sees Shelvey loft a corner into the box soon, but it is just too long and is comfortably cleared away to safety.

46′ We are back under way for the second half!Though the visitors have actually edged most of the main stats so far – ahead in terms of possession, passing accuracy and duels won – Burnley are lacking ideas in the final third, so will rue Cornet’s early exit through injury.

Therefore, hopes of ending a long winless run at St James’ Park – stretching back eight league games, since April 1976 – must rely on a spark of inspiration from elsewhere.

A relatively uneventful first half ended in a flurry of action, as Newcastle took advantage of a large slice of fortune to take the lead and Saint-Maximin’s prompting nearly helped them to increase a barely deserved advantage.

Understandably, given the desperate need for points, both sides have been nervous in possession, but further goals remain likely as Burnley must open up after the interval.

45′ + 4′ HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-0 BURNLEY

45′ + 3′ On the counter, following Burnley’s free-kick, Saint-Maximin gets to the right byline this time, but his sharp cutback is clipped over the crossbar by Willock from close range.

45′ + 2′ Gudmundsson buys a free-kick out on the right wing, with Joelinton being lured into the challenge. Burnley have a set-piece opportunity just before the break.

45′ Another mazy dribble by the increasingly influential Saint-Maximin eventually peters out on the edge of the box, and a rapid Burnley counter then ends in Vydra slipping as he guides a shot well over the bar.

43′ Newcastle’s tails are up, as Joelinton embarks on a driving run through the centre, but his shot from outside the area is charged down by the fast closing Burnley back four.F. SchärAssist

40′ Pope’s fumble under the attention of Schar struck the Swiss defender before running into the path of Wilson to score.C. WilsonGoal

40′ NEWCASTLE LEAD! A horrible error of judgment by Pope sees the Burnley goalkeeper spill a high ball onto the head of Schar, and the ball trickles to Wilson, who does well to retain his composure and fire the opening goal home from inside the box. What a relief for nervy Newcastle, who now lead 1-0!

38′ Another brilliant run from the industrious Saint-Maximin helps the Frenchman get to the left byline, from where he crosses the ball in for Almiron.

Tarkowski gets his body in the way to block the shot, but a possible use of his arm goes unpunished.

36′ A frustrated Joelinton catches the heels of the backtracking Collins, conceding a needless free-kick on the edge of Burnley’s area.

34′ Yet another wasteful ball into the final third, this time by Shelvey, sums up Newcastle’s lack of direction so far, as Pope gathers it with ease. Burnley’s ambitions have been limited too, so the game has yet to catch fire.

32′ Schar has been struggling with a knock picked up in the challenge with Brownhill a while ago, but has opted to continue for now, with the half-time interval not far away.M. VydraM. Cornet

31′ Having picked up an early injury, the unfortunate Cornet comes off to be replaced by Vydra up front for Burnley – the Czech striker’s 10th substitute appearance of the season.

29′ A superb last-gasp challenge from Taylor blocks out Wilson’s efforts to connect with a cross from Saint-Maximin just outside the six-yard box, as Burnley continue to drop back

27′ Newcastle are just the fourth team to fail to win any of their opening 14 games of a Premier League campaign, and each of the previous three were relegated at the end of the season.

25′ Boos and whistles rain down upon the referee from the stands, as a mistimed sliding challenge on Manquillo brings the full-back down in midfield.

No further action is taken against Brownhill, though, and eventually he returns to his feet.

23′ After a typically dizzying Saint-Maximin jaunt up the left flank and into the box, he cuts the ball back for Shelvey just outside the box.

However, he is caught in two minds as he lines up the ball and barely makes contact.

21′ Shelvey picks out Almiron in space 25 yards from goal, but the Paraguayan forward turns and fires wildly over the crossbar with a hurried attempt.

19′ Newcastle remain tense and disjointed, as the anxious crowd already starts to quieten. Burnley must be pleased; that will fit Sean Dyche’s plans perfectly.

17′ Newcastle have conceded a league-high 30 goals so far (17 of which have come at St James’ Park) and such defensive woes have contributed to the second-longest winless run in their club history – the Magpies’ worst streak since 1978.

15′ An aimless free-kick from the right by Schar is guided out of play by Burnley, away from the waiting Lewis, summing up Newcastle’s start. The hosts subsequently win a corner, but take it short and the attacking opportunity fizzles out.

13′ OFF THE POST! The ball drifts across to Gudmundsson on the left side of the Newcastle box, and the Burnley winger powers a deflected shot at goal from a narrow angle. However, it strikes the outside of the post and goes behind for a corner. Newcastle are still stuck in neutral here!

11′ Joelinton intervenes in the area to deny Burnley’s numerous aerial threats the chance to latch onto a crossfield free-kick by Lowton.

9′ From a 25-yard free-kick in a central area, Cornet ambitiously strikes an attempt at goal, but it only strikes Wilson in the defensive wall and bounces away to safety.

7′ Almiron commits his second foul in the space of a minute, this time on Taylor, but again evades anything more than the concession of a free-kick.

5′ The first chance falls to Burnley! A long, hopeful ball from the back is nodded down by Wood into the path of Cornet, but the Ivorian forward drags his 20-yard effort wide of the left-hand post.

3′ Both teams have drawn seven matches in the Premier League this season, almost half of the games played by the pair so far.

2′ A lively start sees the ball zipping around the pristine playing surface, but neither side can exert any control just yet.

1′ To an enormous roar from the home faithful, we are under way in Newcastle! Both sets of players are out on the St James’ Park pitch, with kick-off just moments away!Burnley are also bolstered by the return of regular starters James Tarkowski and Ashley Westwood, who were suspended for the draw at Wolves, and both are named in Sean Dyche’s team today.

Injury victims Phil Bardsley and Ashley Barnes remain out of action, while Chris Wood is joined by top scorer Maxwel Cornet in the visitors’ front two.

While Newcastle have no new injury concerns today, they are without Ciaran Clark due to his dismissal against Norwich earning the centre-back a one-match ban.

Nevertheless, the home side welcome back Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie after suspension, and the former comes straight into the starting XI to replace Clark.

In an attacking lineup, Miguel Almiron features on the right wing, with Joelinton joining Callum Wilson up front.SUBS: Wayne Hennessey, Aaron Lennon, Jay Rodriguez, Bobby Thomas, Erik Pieters, Kevin Long, Connor Roberts, Jack Cork, Matej Vydra.BURNLEY (4-4-2): Nick Pope; Matthew Lowton, James Tarkowski, Nathan Collins, Charlie Taylor; Johann Gudmundsson, Josh Brownhill, Ashley Westwood, Dwight McNeil; Maxwel Cornet, Chris Wood.SUBS: Karl Darlow, Jeff Hendrick, Matt Ritchie, Emil Krafth, Jacob Murphy, Dwight Gayle, Federico Fernandez, Sean Longstaff, Isaac Hayden.NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-4-2): Martin Dubravka; Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis; Miguel Almiron, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock, Allan Saint-Maximin; Callum Wilson, Joelinton.Burnley also dug deep to hold in-form Wolves to a draw on Wednesday, three days after their previous Premier League fixture versus Tottenham was snowed off shortly before kick-off.

That result at Molineux extends the Clarets’ unbeaten run to five league games – with each of their last three ending in draws – but they remain just inside the drop zone: three points and two places above Newcastle, with a game in hand. Still seeking their first Premier League win of the season at the 15th attempt today, Newcastle picked up just their seventh point from a 1-1 draw with Norwich City in midweek, despite going down to 10 men early on.

That leaves the Magpies rooted to the foot of the table, with the recently appointed Eddie Howe and his team facing an uphill struggle to retain the club’s top flight status. Hello and welcome to live coverage of today’s Premier League basement battle between Newcastle United and Burnley, at St James’ Park!
