The death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, a 12-year-old student at Dowen College in Lagos, has prompted outrage among Nigerian celebrities, who are demanding justice for the youngster.
Oromoni had been tormented and beaten by classmates, according to reports. According to a Twitter user with the handle @perrisonoromoni, who claimed to be the youngster’s cousin, the boy died as a result of his alleged injuries from the beating.
The school, however, refuted the charges in a statement released on Wednesday, claiming that Oromoni was not tormented or abused and simply complained of hip pain after playing football.
The victim’s cousin presented images and video evidence, which tended to verify the fact that the boy was tormented and beaten; an action that may have contributed to his death, contrary to the school’s explanation.
In the meantime, the Lagos State Government has ordered the school to be closed indefinitely until the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
Following the closure, Nollywood actress Kanayo O. Kanayo urged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that simply closing the institution is insufficient.
“Dowen college must pay for this #justiceforsylvester,” the actor said in a video posted on his Instagram account.
