West Ham equalizes twice before a bizarre finish Chelsea suffers its second defeat of the season thanks to Arthur Masuaku goal; Manuel Lanzini’s penalty and Jarrod Bowen’s strike cancelled out Thiago Silva and Mason Mount goals. After the weekend matchups, Chelsea might slide to third place.

West Ham staged a remarkable late comeback, coming from behind twice to upset leaders Chelsea 3-2 and leave their Premier League title challengers with an open door.

Leaders of the league Chelsea went to the London Stadium knowing that a win would increase their lead at the top to four points before Manchester City and Liverpool ever kicked a ball this weekend, but they were met by a West Ham side that would not be defeated.

After Jorginho’s bad back pass and Jarrod Bowen’s tenacious push saw goalkeeper Edouard Mendy jump in and concede the spot-kick, Manuel Lanzini equalized for the Hammers from the penalty spot five minutes before the break.

On the stroke of half-time, Mason Mount restored Chelsea’s advantage, but the hosts surged back through Bowen’s rasping drive (56), as Thomas Tuchel’s team conceded more than one goal for only the third time in his 53rd game in command.

The hammer blow came when Arthur Masuaku’s fizzed cross (87) bamboozled Mendy, entered the Chelsea net, and saw West Ham win their first league victory in four games to clinch fourth position in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s second defeat of the season breaks an eight-game Premier League unbeaten run, keeps Manchester City and Liverpool in contention, and means the Blues might finish the weekend in third place.
